The Woodlands has a dynamic history that continues to inspire visitors every day. Unlock our history by sharing our story as a volunteer tour guide. As a tour guide you'll delve into the mystery of William Hamilton, stories of the people who lived and worked on the 18th c. estate, horticultural history, architectural history, and Victorian era cemeteries. Tours are offered weekly on Wednesdays on the hour from 1:00pm - 6:00pm.

Interested in volunteering with us? Guide candidates must attend both guide-training workshops.

COMBINED WITH WORKSHOP 2 - Workshop 1: William Hamilton and the 18th Century Woodlands Estate
Wednesday, March 22nd from 2:00pm - 5:00pm
Immerse yourself in The Woodlands as an 18th century estate. You'll learn about William Hamilton, the staff that ran The Woodlands, the mansion, and our horticultural legacy.

Workshop 2: The Rural Cemetery and The Woodlands Today
Wednesday, March 22nd from 2:00pm - 5:00pm
We'll talk about how a mansion ended up in cemetery, and what that means for West Philly today. Then, give a practice tour to The Woodlands staff and your peers!

We are looking for engaged individuals available to give tours on Wednesday afternoons and evenings April through October. A strong interest in meeting new people, being a good listener, and prior knowledge in early American/Philadelphia history is desired.

Volunteer Benefits Include:

  • Helping a small non-profit achieve their mission
  • Learn in depth about one of America's most influential historic sites
  • Free membership to The Woodlands
  • Spending time in one of Philadelphia's most beautiful spaces

Our mission is to enrich the lives of area residents and visitors by serving as a hub for activities and educational programs that interpret, celebrate and make available to the public The Woodlands’ historic buildings and tranquil green space.
